Benchmarking Visit from UTP: Advancing Simulation-Based Teaching and Learning with Ansys

On 24 July 2025, most of AMSERU members proudly hosted a benchmarking visit from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP). The visit stemmed from connections made during the recent 1st ANSYS Academic Conference in Kuala Lumpur, where Dr. Suazlan, Dr. Sa’adah and Dr. Syazwani engaged with UTP representatives on the integration of simulation into teaching and learning.

💡 The visit centered on Ir. Ts. Dr. Suazlan bin Mt Aznam, who presented his team’s simulation-driven curriculum innovation, particularly in foundational engineering courses. His approach—embedding ANSYS into the teaching of heat and mass transfer and fluid mechanics have become a model for transforming passive learning into interactive, industry-aligned education.

🧪 The session also featured shared experiences from fellow AMSERU members actively applying ANSYS in their respective courses:

  • Dr. Sa’adah, who integrates ANSYS Fluent in teaching Fluid Mechanics, enabling students to visualize flow patterns and velocity fields.
  • Dr. Ahmad Zahirani, who uses simulation for cantilever beam analysis to support understanding of mechanical stress and deformation.
  • Dr. Syazwani, who applies ANSYS in conducting static structural stress tests, linking simulation to 3D printing and failure analysis.

🤝 As AMSERU Coordinator, Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Noor Azlina Hassan presented ongoing AMSERU initiatives and opened the floor for future collaboration in teaching, benchmarking, and simulation-based research.

📌 The fruitful visit included:

  • Overview of ANSYS Curriculum Integration
  • Course-level Demonstrations
  • Dialogue on Benchmarking & Collaboration
  • Q&A and Institutional Sharing

🙏 We extend our heartfelt thanks to the UTP delegation to AP Ir. Ts. Dr. Masdi Muhammad, AP Dr. Saravanan, Dr. Hilmi Hussin, AP Dr. Mohammad Shakir, Dr. Tamiru, Dr. Tuan Mohammad Yusoff Shah, and AP Dr. Hamdan Ya—for their visit, thoughtful engagement, and meaningful discussions. We look forward to continued collaboration and knowledge exchange.
