Personal Log by AMSERU Member Dr. Syazwani Mohd Zaki: Insights from AMDES 2025

From January 14 to 16, 2025, I had the privilege of attending the ASEAN Materials and Design Education Symposium (AMDES 2025) at Nanyang Technological University. After five years of working at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and having taught over ten courses/subjects, I deemed this an opportune moment to further my understanding by learning from esteemed educators around the globe regarding their assessment methodologies in the classroom.

I participated in this conference at my own expense, and I found it to be a worthwhile investment. On January 14, I attended a workshop organized by Ansys and CAD-IT, during which I was introduced to the Ansys-Granta Edu Pack for Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). Although this was my first experience with the Ansys-Granta Edu Pack, I look forward to delving deeper into the software. Additionally, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Wen Zhou in person. Our previous interaction had been virtual, as I was involved in the Ansys Curriculum Grant awarded to my colleague, Dr. Suazlan. It was a pleasure to connect face-to-face with Dr. Wen.

Over the course of the two-days conference, I gained invaluable insights from distinguished speakers hailing from Singapore, UK, India, Thailand, China, and other countries. I expressed my gratitude for the opportunity to learn about the assessments they implemented in the context of Materials Science and Engineering education. This experience has broadened my perspective and emphasized the need for continual learning and exploration beyond one’s comfort zone.

The AMDES conference, comprising workshop, presentations and discussion, has imparted significant value to my development as a junior lecturer. I look forward to the potential for collaboration and networking that this event has fostered among educators from outside Malaysia.
