Welcome Notes

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh and warm greetings,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Mechatronics Engineering at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). Whether you are a prospective undergraduate or postgraduate student, an industry partner, or simply curious about our work, we are delighted to have you visit our page. Situated just outside Kuala Lumpur, we are ideally positioned near Malaysia’s industrial and technological hubs—offering our students strong connections to real-world applications and career opportunities.

Our department has a proud legacy as a pioneer in Mechatronics education in Malaysia. In 1994, IIUM introduced the first Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Mechatronics in the country, and by 1998, we had established one of the nation’s first dedicated Mechatronics departments. Today, our BEng in Mechatronics Engineering stands out for its balanced integration of mechanical, electrical, and control/software components—unlike many similar programmes.

As to ensure that our graduates are versatile problem-solvers and well-prepared for the evolving demands of industry, our graduate can choose from three in-demand specialisations

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Robotics and Automation
  • Instrumentation and Control

Our academic strength lies in our people. All our lecturers hold PhDs, and more than a quarter are registered Malaysian Professional Engineers (Ir). Our commitment to research excellence is reflected in the department’s 6-star MyRA rating in 2024, with eight staff members individually achieving 6-star status in the same year. This research culture enriches our teaching, ensuring that students learn not only from textbooks but also from cutting-edge innovations in the field. We take pride in embedding values and ethics into our teaching, producing engineers who excel technically and act with integrity.

For those pursuing postgraduate studies, we offer a Master of Mechatronics Engineering in both Coursework and Research modes, with research specialisations in Mechatronics Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Robotics and Automation. The same specialisations are available in our PhD programme, providing opportunities for advanced research guided by experienced academics. Whether your ambition is to design intelligent machines, develop AI-driven systems, or lead innovation in automation, our programmes provide the foundation for a fulfilling and impactful career.

We invite you to explore our offerings and join our mission to advance engineering knowledge, serve society, and shape a future where technology and ethics go hand in hand.
