Celebrating Research Excellence in Materials Imaging – Dr. Syazwani Mohd Zaki Shortlisted in the 2024 IOM3 Imaging Competition

In October 2024, Dr. Syazwani Mohd Zaki participated in the 2024 Imaging Competition organised by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), UK, a prestigious event specifically aimed at early career researchers in the field of materials science.

Her imaging work, which focused on the morphology of PVA-Chitosan Hydrogel incorporated with Polyaniline, captured using FESEM Quanta FEG 450, was shortlisted among the top entries for its scientific relevance and visual impact. On November 6th, she took part in an engaging online session where she presented and explained the intricacies of her imaging techniques to a diverse and international audience.

The competition, themed “Materials, Minerals & Mining in… A Sustainable Future,” invited submissions across three categories: materials, minerals, and mining—all centred on building a more sustainable world through advanced research.

From a research perspective, understanding the morphology of materials offers invaluable insights into the phenomena under investigation. During this journey, researchers are often struck by the intricate and sometimes counterintuitive structures observed at the microscopic level. These fascinating morphologies are more than just visual—they hold the keys to groundbreaking discoveries, often hidden to the naked eye.

As researchers, it is essential that we cultivate a deep appreciation for these microscopic wonders, for they are fundamental to advancing our scientific understanding and achieving breakthroughs in our fields.

👏 Congratulations once again to Dr. Syazwani on this well-deserved recognition.
