Visit to Indah Water Konsortium by CHEN2313
       21 Dec 2022
BATU CAVES: ‘Brief but highly entertaining and informative’ are the words that may describe our visit to Loji Pengolahan Kumbahan IWK GBK 254 at Taman Selayang Mutiara, Batu Caves, Selangor. On December 21, 2022, a number of 40 students from the Life Sciences for Chemical Engineering class went to one of the Indah Water Konsortium manned plant facilities for a site visit under the supervision of our class’s instructor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Raha Binti Raus. This visit was planned as an initiative to explore and study the microbial activity in our environment by combining the theoretical knowledge learned in class with the actual application in real-life water treatment systems.

During the visit, we were first brought to the conference room for a light breakfast and a brief introduction given by Mr. Aqil from Indah Water Konsortium Corporate Communication Unit. Here, we were introduced to how sewage treatment is done from the start when the sewage enters the facilities until the end when the treated water is released into the river.

Then we were separated into 2 groups and were taken to visit each of the processing units. There are a total of 7 units that we were able to visit on that day which are the Screening chamber, Grit & Grease chamber, Aeration Tank, Sludge Removal Tank, Chlorination Tank, Pump & Blower Room, and Sludge Bedding. Each of these units has its own significant function in the water treatment steps and we are very grateful that we were given the chance to learn and observe each of them.

The visit ends at around 11.30 am with a short appreciation speech delivered by Prof. Raha and some photography sessions. To conclude our visit, It is best to say that we were able to gain a lot of knowledge which we won’t be able to get in class. Being able to observe how the work is done in real-life really does open our eyes to the world and boost our spirit to do our best for the future.
