On Friday, 22 November 2024, the Kulliyyah of Engineering (KOE), IIUM, proudly hosted Professorial Lecture No. 2/2024, presented by Prof. Dr. Maizirwan Mel from the CHES Department. This lecture marked Prof. Maizirwan’s inaugural professorial speech, making it a significant milestone in his distinguished academic career.
Prof. Maizirwan’s lecture addressed key aspects of biomass energy, emphasizing its importance as a renewable, carbon-neutral, and waste-reducing alternative to fossil fuels. He detailed various innovative approaches, such as:
- Biogas production using landfill waste and palm oil mill residues.
- Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
- The development of hydrogen fuel as a clean energy solution.
Through real-world case studies, including biomass power plants in Pahang and biogas plants processing palm oil mill effluent, Prof. Maizirwan illustrated how biomass not only contributes to sustainable energy but also creates economic opportunities and reduces dependency on fossil fuels.
