The visit began with an insightful presentation by Prof Dato’ Dr. Mohd Ali Hasan, a senior Principal Researcher, on the overview of research activities and their ultimate mission to utilize biomass and convert it into valuable products (Picture 1). There were several available pilot plants located at the UPM Biorefinery Complex including biogas, biochar, biodiesel, biocompost, nanocellulose and polymer nanocomposite
For biodiesel pilot plant, we were explained that biodiesel is produced using used cooking oil (UCO) collected from local community. The produced biodiesel is then used as fuel for machinery operation at Biorefinery Complex. We were mentioned that this project is part of community project in which to instill awareness among local community on the danger of reusing cooking oil repeatedly and the benefit of converting UCO to biodiesel. The reactor used for the biodiesel production was shown as in Picture 2. We also visited others pilot plant that are available there as shown in other pictures below.
It is hoped that this site visit will give a clear goal on highlighting the crucial role of sustainable practices play in shaping a better future. The BERC members expressed their gratitude to UPM EB Group members and all IIUM BERC members as well as to the CHES Department for the full support. It is hoped that from the visit, BERC and EB Group will have a good collaboration on the future and emphasized the importance of collaboration between industry, university, society and government in driving sustainable development.
